MTU Services (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd, better known as MSM, was incorporated in 1981 to supply MTU parts to users. At the time, the company was called Diesel Product and Support (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd (DPS). As MTU engines had already been in existence in Malaysia since the 60s and formed the majority engine population in the Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN), the company quickly grew to sole country distributor of MTU products and complete service provider.

Impressive Clientele & Wide Range of Products Offered

30 years on, the Malaysian authorities are still important customers of MSM. 80% of all Navy vessels, 70% of the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency assets, 70% of the Marine Police boats and 30% of all Customs boats are powered by MTU engines. In the ferry market, MTU holds a 35% market share. Four private mega yachts owned by prominent Malaysian businessmen are also powered by MTU engines, namely with 16V 396 TB 82, 12V 4000 M90, 16V 2000 M90 and 12V 2000 M90 engines.

With the combination of Detroit Diesel Corporation, USA and MTU Friedrichshafen, Germany, MSM, as other distributors around the world, also distributes Detroit Diesel engines. With the recent addition of VM Motori engines into the MTU range of products, MTU has become a world leader in marine, rail, power generation, military vehicles, construction, agriculture, mining industries and oil & gas application. MSM is the sole and only recognised agent of MTU in Malaysia, with the exceptional know-how and the capability to offer comprehensive product and customer support to MTU users in Malaysia and Brunei.

In recent years, MSM successfully penetrated the Country’s National Carrier, Malaysia Airline System in terms of providing Maintenance Repair and Overhaul (MRO) services for its Ground Support Equipment (GSE) powered mostly with DD engines. In this context, even Air Asia Berhad, the fast expanding LCC (Low Cost Carrier) in the region has also opted to use MSM’s services. With the aviation sector growing rapidly, MSM is confident of gaining a foothold in the industry.

MSM’s dealer network in the country also provides a basis for meeting the demands of the oil and gas and highly competitive commercial markets. Storage facilities at authorized dealers near selected Customs warehouses are being planned so that service is improved at locations where engines for the oil and gas market are concentrated.

Experience & Expertise

In 1994, the company invested in an MTU service centre, built in Manjung, Perak. The 52 employees stationed there provide rapid response services as well as and carry out complete major engine overhauls. MSM’s technical specialists are trained in Germany and in Tognum Asia and are highly qualified with years of experience in working on MTU engines. It is with this expertise that they are capable of conducting training courses for customers, with comprehensive training modules and qualified trainers.

The area and built-up of the Service Centre complex is approximately 114,000 sq. ft. The first buildings were erected on the vast compound in 1994, followed by a second section in 1997. Later, the larger one of the workshop buildings was extended by a test area.  The test facilities and other equipment in the centre required investments of 8.6 million Ringgit since it’s establishment, apart from the land and building. For special tools alone, MSM has invested 3.5 million Ringgit (EUR 700,000).

The Service Centre is aptly supported by a dynamic corporate division, marketing team and logisticians in its head quarters in Dataran Prima Petaling Jaya as well as the In-Service Support Division based in Rawang, Selangor. By the end of 2010, MSM had 190 staff, a significant growth from the 5 personnel who formed the company in 1981.
